Kristy: Bon Voyage II – Port Vila, Vanuatu

On the 3rd day, we had arrived on the shore of Vanuatu on an island named Port Vila. It was very hot and the sun was very unforgiving that day. We were dropped off at the market city of Vila and given free roaming for 4 hours before we had to return to the docks. The place we had arrived at was a bustling marketplace full of exotic island fruits and locally produced items.

The people of Vanuatu were absolutely lovely. Although we did get a few stares as tourists, they were always smiling and happy to help. Most of my girlfriends bought souvenirs such as dresses, ornaments and paperweights. The people of Vanuatu used the currency of vatu.

The twenty of us decided to take a scenic route and visit a waterfall that was 30 minutes away form the market. So we all fit into two mini-vans and was on our way. Vanuatu didn’t seem to be very populated so the streets were fairly quiet with very few vehicles. Despite the dusty roads and old buildings that we saw on the way, Port Vila was a very beautiful island with lush greenery and crystal clear waters.

We were finally dropped off at the entrance of Mele Cascades and followed the trail on foot to see the cascades. Most of us complained of the heat but luckily the canopy of the trees provided shade for most of the trail. On the way to the cascades, there were 3 Vanuatu men singing hymns in harmony together- they had such lovely voices. We all rested beside them and complimented them on their singing.

Shorty after, we decided to continue our journey to the cascades and it wasn’t before long that we had found what we came for. The cascades were very picturesque with waters running cool and clear. The sight was relaxing and we felt as if there wasn't a care in the world. Without swimwear, none of us were prepared for a swim, but some of my friends dove in anyway with all their clothes on. Most of us just dipped our feet into the cool water to provide relief from the hot weather but the beauty of the Mele Cascades was worth every second of the almost-scorching heat.

We were all so excited to be on shore after 3 days at sea- Vanuatu's scenery just looked simply magical. The Mele Cascades made Port Villa an unforgettable first stop on our 10 day cruise trip.
